Penelope Burk: Why Do Fundraisers Stay?

Salary matters. However, benefits and working conditions are as important to fundraisers as bottom-line pay. Offer flexible working hours and other perks, especially if you can't compete on salary. Young fundraisers often move on to get more experience and advance their career. There used to be more middle management layers between the frontline fundraisers and the executive team, largely due to cost-cutting. Unfortunately, this removes young fundraisers' assumption that they can build their careers where they are now.

Look at the jobs of management-level fundraisers (who say their job descriptions are impossible to achieve), and carve out some projects for younger fundraisers. Interesting projects and career growth will help you to retain them.
